# Set up your publishing key

To publish for you, Studs needs a Roblox Open Cloud API key with permission to update your places. You create it once on Roblox and paste it into Studs. It takes about two minutes, and the wizard in Studs walks you through it: open the avatar menu and choose **Publishing Key**.

## The steps

1. In the wizard, click **Open Creator Dashboard**. Roblox opens in a new tab.
2. Click **Create API Key** and name it `Studs Publishing Key`.
3. Under Access Permissions, open **Select API System** and choose **universe-places**. Not "universe", not anything else. This is the step most people get wrong.
4. Under Select Operations to Add, choose **write**. Leave "Restrict by Experience" off. The row should now read universe-places: write.
5. Set Expiration to **No Expiration**, then click **Save & Generate Key** and confirm.
6. Copy the key straight away. Roblox shows it only once.
7. Back in Studs, paste the key and click **Save Key**. You will see "You're all set!".

From then on, [publishing](/support/publishing-to-roblox/publish-your-game-to-roblox) is one click. The key is stored securely and only used to publish your games.

## If something is off

* **"Your API key is missing the universe-places write permission."** Click **How to fix this** in Studs. It opens the wizard at the permission step. Edit the key on Roblox to add universe-places with write, or create a new key.
* **"Your API key is invalid or expired."** Create a new key with No Expiration and paste it in.
* **Lost the key?** Roblox will not show it again. Create a new one and save it in Studs.
